I have a secret...

...I'm a foodie.

Ok, so it's not that sort of secret. Still, it's not something I blog about very often. But that's more a result of omission than a lack of interest. I've never had the energy to have a whole blog dedicated to food.

But since I don't really know what to do here at Dreamwidth (and because folks here already read my relatively content-free...er, content over at LJ), I thought I would do something a little different over here.

To that end, here we go. First foodie post evah!

Over Valentine's Day, I baked Red Velvet Cupcakes for the very first time. It happens to be one of my favorite cake flavors, but I've never actually tried to make one myself. Cupcakes seemed relatively hassle-free (relative to a layer cake), and this time, I decided to make it doubly fun by letting The Kid (all of 14 months at the time) put the sprinkles on at the end. (It WAS doubly fun, in case you're wondering...until I had to clean it all up).

Here are a couple of pictures:

I even have a recipe and all, for those with interest in that sort of thing! :D

Ooh, excellent! Another thing we have in common. I have a food blog and a recipe blog (one is the recipes and pictures and a story about the making of it and what inspired me and the other is just recipes and pictures).

Not seeing your pictures here, for some reason...
lillbet: (*facepalm*)

Still nothing. One showed up for a moment and then when I went back to comment it was gone. Not so impressed with DW right now.

Maybe you should be a foodie on LJ, where pictures actually show up, and do your fic here?

I know *hangs head in shame* I have neglected poor old Feasts and Flicks. Mainly 'cos I've been crap at cooking lately *hangs head doubly in shame*

Hehe there's your excuse. I'll just say that I'm really lazy and keep meaning to post reviews and recipes on to FandF but forget perennially. Hmm maybe I'll do a BBC period drama review there...idea!

OMG icon love.
I should bring it with me to big family get together so when everyone else goes off to do whatever, we can watch bits of it hehe.
And um, I HEART Matthew MacFadyen.

That looks yummy! The only thing I've ever baked is banana bread because it's fairly easy and I haven't gone wrong with that (yet). I'm afraid of baking, really. I'm too much of a free-reign cook to bother with all the little details that go into baking :D

And your icon looks delicious too!

OM NOM NOM NOM!

[identity profile] roh-wyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. They were actually very yummy. But very messy to make. That red stuff gets everywhere!!

Oh, I can imagine! Particularly with The Kid helping you out. ;)

[identity profile] roh-wyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortunately, I had R keep him busy while I was doing all the mixing and baking. But omg, you should have seen the curious looks he kept giving me.

It was both adorable and vaguely disturbing. I have a suspicion he's going to grow up into an evil genius of some sort. :D

Fantastic icon! Allan-of-the-Two-Swords ftw! ;)

[identity profile] precious-rosie.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, the Two-Swords are made of wine! ;-D He's making sure no one pinches *his* cup-cake!

LMAO!

Well, you can't be too careful when you're wearing a monk's habit. ;)

That's cute. The last time I tried to make a cake, I put double the amount of flour I was supposed to and it was a disaster :(

[identity profile] roh-wyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It's easy to go wrong with cake, sadly. But even the wrong ones are often edible...the proof of the pudding being in the tasting and all. ;)

[identity profile] anthimaeria.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks good! I'd like to see the recipe.

[identity profile] roh-wyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'll post that to DW soon, actually.

Cupcake shortly after destruction by The Kid
*rotfl*

[identity profile] roh-wyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I wish I could say he just ate it, but actually, he squished it in his hand and then threw little pieces of it all over the kitchen.

It's like living with a monkey sometimes. :)

[identity profile] sealover-astara.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Heheh! I bet this sounds funnier than it is at times, though.

[identity profile] roh-wyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's usually only funny in hindsight. :)

[identity profile] gregoria44.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So pretty! And edible. Quite possibly the perfect combination.

:D

[identity profile] roh-wyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true. You eat with your eyes, or something like that! ;)

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The intarwebz hate(s) me today- no pictures.

[identity profile] roh-wyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. It's odd that you can't see the pictures.

Is photobucket a blocked site for you? Something like that? *is confused*

[identity profile] dcwash.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The cupcakes look lovely. I made red velvet cake once. It required a whole bottle of red food coloring. I almost think that's where the distinct flavor comes from.

And it's ironic that I have a "triple coconut" cupcake sitting here on my desk, waiting to be eaten at teatime, that I picked up at a cupcake shop on my way home this afternoon. At $3 for a normal-sized cupcake, it had better be good....

But I've got a technical question. This post popped up on my LJ Friends page, but you said you were posting it on Dreamwidth. So how did I get it? I'm not even sure what Dreamwidth IS!

[identity profile] roh-wyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The recipe I used called for two entire bottles of red food coloring. It made for very pretty batter, but omg, so messy.

Dreamwidth is an LJ clone service, with slightly better..er, service. Originally, I only posted this there, and I wanted to try out the "crosspost to LJ" function, so I did it with this post.

So yeah, you're not hallucinating or anything. This really IS on LJ. Heh.

[identity profile] sspring92.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I have always thought red velvet cake sounded do fancy and decadent. I have Never Ever had it!

[identity profile] lilan14.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
LOL...I think I wanna meet The Kid. From a safe distance. :-P
