There's been a Metro accident in Washington DC (on the Red Line, near the DC-MD border).

One person is reported dead and apparently, they are treating this as a "mass casualty event."

Keep all the Metro commuters in your thoughts.

My friend Ghina alerted me to it after it happened, so I'm laying low at work for a bit- kinda cuts into my evening, but it's better to be here than sitting on the platform waiting and worrying. My family is okay, and my friends.

Thanks for posting this, btw.

Thanks. I would have been in the stalled train, but my friend Patti (who I post about once in awhile) would have been on the train that ended up halfway up the other. She usually rides the redline to Fort Totten. Today, luckily for her, her hubs had dental trauma and couldn't drive her to the station, so she drove in herself, thank heaven.

Two dead and they've just upped the injury count--which, as they pointed out, includes everything from skinned knees to broken necks--to a hundred.

Kind of odd that I live in DC, on the Red Line, and I found out about this from a blog post by somebody in Texas (or someplace like that)....

Oh, I'm glad you weren't on the train or anything! Hope nobody you know was in that either.

No, but a friend of mine lives right by the station where this happened. She's okay, though. Everybody else I know either commutes from Virginia--different line, different direction, different everything--or from within DC, and this train was coming into town from Maryland.

Thanks for your concern, though!

My parents lived in the DC area (on the Virginia side) for years, but my dad always rode the Red Line to work. I know loads of people who are regular Metro commuters (although mostly on the Blue or Orange lines).

I know stuff like this happens everywhere. We had an interstate bridge fall down here, after all. Still, it's plenty scary.

That's sort of how it goes, right?

I ride from Tenley, you? (If you don't mind my asking.)

Actually, I use buses more than anything else. I guess I was on a bus from the National Archives when this happened, for instance. I live downtown and also walk more than Metro.

Hey, didn't know there were so many DC people here.

I'm in VA at the end of the Orange line. On the odd occassion I go into DC I usually end up on the Red Line. It's still rather alarming. Good to hear you guys are okay.

So I very smartly kept calling the DC metro the "depths of doom" this weekend. As a joke, 'cos it looked like a sci fi pod thing.

The entire time, I kept kicking myself for saying that, worried that something bad would happen while we were on the train.

This just makes me really sad.

Yeah, I've stopped making any offhand comments about modes of transport anymore. *sigh*

Were you in DC this weekend? Will you be home next weekend? We're there on Friday (the 3rd) I think.
